Sonoran Desert School is a charter public high school serving grades 7-12 in Gold Canyon, Arizona.  SDS was founded in 1999 by teachers.  SDS features the following:

  • Public high school
  • Free tuition
  • Individualized curriculum
  • Certified instructors
  • Accessible technology

What is special about the SDS program? SDS offers an accelerated curriculum featuring individualized instruction, self-paced study, and the integration of technology.  All instructors at SDS are certified in accordance with the national initiative toward high-quality teachers.  The instructional program at SDS is aligned with the Arizona Academic Standards and mixes individual study with small group activities and large group discussions. Students have daily access to computer applications and information technology, both of which are integrated with required courses.

Who can benefit from SDS? Our small school uses blended instruction to meet student needs.  Blended instruction combines the benefits of a digital curriculum (multimedia instruction, immediate feedback, improved communication, etc.) with 3 important factors: Structure, Support, and Socialization.  Structure means providing an orderly, scheduled, and disciplined school setting which ensures students actually do their schoolwork.  Support means that students have immediate access to instructors who can help with learning questions and technical issues.  Socialization means that students have the opportunity to interact with different types of people, which in our small school means fewer “different types” but generally more in-depth relationships since students know each other better.
